Things to do in Vancouver, August 2014

Things to do in Vancouver  |  07.29.2014  |

There’s no shortage of things to do in Vancouver this August! It’s been beautifully hot this summer, so we’re torn between soaking in the rays outside, and seeking refuge in the air-conditioning while we take in a show or two. Whichever you choose, this city will keep you entertained!

Food Cart Fest
FOOD CART FESTIVAL
We all know food tastes better when it comes from a truck, but what happens when you want kimchi tacos and your friend wants fried rice balls? You can leg it a few blocks and hit up a couple of different trucks, or head to Vancouver’s weekly Food Cart Fest which brings together 20 of the city’s favourite mobile food-dispensaries in the one spot! Along with filling your belly, you’ll enjoy DJs, a craft market and ping pong.
Every summer Sunday at Olympic Village

“LEGALLY BLONDE” AT THEATRE UNDER THE STARS
Just like kimchi tacos, it turns out that theatre is even better al fresco too! Everyone’s favourite pink-wearing law student Elle Woods hits the boards in Theatre Under The Stars’ production of “Legally Blonde: The Musical.” The company, which performs in Malkin Bowl, smack-dab in the middle of downtown Vancouver’s Stanley Park, is family friendly, and is also putting on a production of Shrek: The Musical on alternating nights.

BABES & BATHERS: HISTORY OF THE SWIMSUIT
From “wool to wow,” this stylish show at the maritime museum offers a fascinating look at how far swimsuits have come, melding technology and fashion. The show covers swimwear from the 1890s through to the 1980s, and along with the main show, make sure you check out the sister exhibition of swimsuit mail-order catalogues from Vancouver’s Woodward’s department store.
Through November 2 at Vancouver Maritime Museum

SUMMER NIGHT CONCERTS AT THE PNE
We call it “The PNE,” which stands for “Pacific National Exhibition,” but it’s basically our biggest provincial agricultural fair. But one of the most outstanding things about the PNE is the Summer Night Concerts – free with your general admission ticket, you can pull up a seat in the beer garden and enjoy shows from ABSOLUTE LEGENDS such as Joan Jett (Aug 17), Air Supply (Aug 20), Gipsy Kings (Aug 23), Boyz II Men (Aug 28) and Glass Tiger (Sept 1). Boom! [Drops mic.]
August 16 to September 1 at The PNE
