Things to Do in Vancouver, August 2018
Wendy Underwood
August in Vancouver is all about trying to cram as much “summer” into your life as possible! That means beach hangs, farmers markets, patio time and forest hikes are all on the agenda. If you’re visiting Vancouver, we recommend making time for all of these, but should you be looking for actual “stuff to do,” here’s a list of our favourites for the month.
Cabin Fever at the Vancouver Art Gallery
Through September 30
It’s not just the air-conditioning that we love at the Vancouver Art Gallery; we’re also pretty fond of the award-winning, thought-provoking exhibitions that they mount throughout the year. Cabin Fever is an exploration of the position that this iconic dwelling holds among the North American psyche, with three main themes: Shelter, Utopia and Porn.

KitsFest
August 10 – 12
This sports and healthy living festival is a way to combine beach time and a little action. KitsFest takes place over at Kitsilano Beach, just over the Burrard Bridge, and brings together everything from a basketball tournament and beach volleyball, to sunset yoga, bathtub races, live DJs and a family zone. This free festival is a lot of fun, and a great way to rid yourself of any lingering summer hot-dog guilt.

The Fair at the PNE
August 18 – September 3 (closed August 20 & 27)
A Vancouver summer tradition since 1910, The Fair at the Pacific National Exhibition is our answer to the state fairs in the US, and features a lot of the same attractions: pavilions full of Sham-Wows, baby piglets, deep-fried things, gut-dropping rides, and the Super Dogs! But our very favourite part of the fair is the free nightly concerts and this year’s line-up is killer: Chicago, Boys II Men, Cyndi Lauper, The Village People, Air Supply and so many more!

Wild Salmon Celebration
August 25
Wild salmon is synonymous with British Columbian cuisine, and this high-end event aims to both elevate and celebrate. Six top local chefs will host tasting stations for guests to graze while sipping “salmon safe wines” (yes, they’re definitely a thing!) The event, held down at the False Creek Fisherman’s Wharf, right by Granville Island, is a beautiful way to spend a summer evening down on the water.
