Things to Do in Vancouver: August 2021

Is it just us, or did summer fun just make a comeback? While we’re not counting this pandemic over just yet, a good number of Vancouver’s favourite peak season events are back again, and it feels so good! While still mainly sticking outside (or to timed, ticketed events with lots of safety protocols), we’re ready to finish this summer with a bang. Along with the Vancouver Biennale’s BIKEnnale / WALKennale – of which The Burrard is a sponsor – here’s a list of some of our favourites things to do in Vancouver in August.

Hawaii From Above at FlyOver Canada
Through August 15
Canadians might not be invited to visit Hawaii quite yet, we can get a view from the skies via the current show at FlyOver Canada. Hawaii From Above is a 4-D movie experiences, meaning you’ll feel the wind in your hair, the ocean spray in your face, and the tropical breeze as you soar over the islands’ cliffs, rainforests and volcanoes. Afterwards, pick up a poke bowl and relax in our own palm-filled courtyard, and you’ll feel like you’re a couple of time zones west.

Richmond Night Market
Friday, Saturday & Sunday nights
It might be a bit smaller than in the past, but Richmond Night Market is back! Along with the expansive collection of street eats is an expanded outdoor seating area, making it easy for you and your crew to social distance before enjoying shopping for knick-knacks, taking in the live entertainment, and then eating some more. Avoid the entrance line-up by purchasing your ticket online in advance, and register for a free coupon book while you’re at it!

Vancouver Mural Festival
August 4 – 22
The pandemic didn’t put much of a dent in the appeal of the annual Vancouver Mural Festival, given that the main attractions are outside. But what we did miss last year was all of the great events that go alongside the murals. This year, along with 60 new murals across 11 Vancouver neighbourhoods, you’ll also find guided mural walks, workshops and a bunch of exciting live shows on their pop-up patio at the corner of Main Street and East 5th Avenue.

Playland

PNE Fair
August 21 – September 6
This almost didn’t happen, but Dr. Henry announced B.C.’s move into Phase 3 of our restart plan just in time for the PNE to resurrect its annual Fair! This year’s “Fundamentals” version of the Fair will be limited in capacity, but will include the SuperDogs outdoors, the lumberjack show, PlayLand’s rides and games, a number of live performance stages, and all of the weird, deep-fried food you can handle! Because tickets are limited, it’s best to purchase in advance online.
