August in Vancouver is all about the good life: festivals, outdoor activities, and summer celebrations. The month starts with Vancouver Pride (culminating in the parade on August 2) and wraps up with the annual Fair at the PNE. And in between, explore local neighbourhood festivals. Unwind on a patio. Catch one of your favourite musical acts. Locals and visitors take advantage of the long, bright August days to enjoy the outdoors, and there are so many ways to do so! Here are our top things to do in Vancouver in August.
Powell Street Festival
August 1 & 2
As the city’s celebration of Japanese culture, the Powell Street Festival turns 50 this year! You’ll find everything from martial arts demonstrations to live music, arts and crafts, and fun (and Instagrammable!) food. The festival takes place in Oppenheimer Park on the Downtown Eastside, historically the base for Vancouver’s Japanese community. It’s one of our favourite things to do in Vancouver: we love the authentic, earnest, grassroots vibe of this event. Along with musical and dance performances, and plenty of family-friendly crafts, you can also participate with the chance to try sumo wrestling or write haiku poetry.
Vancouver Whitecaps MLS Games
August 1, 19 and 22
If you caught soccer fever over the World Cup last month, feed your new addiction by catching a Vancouver Whitecaps game. The city’s Major League Soccer team plays at BC Place Stadium, the same venue for seven of the recent World Cup games, and they bring just as much excitement and spirit! In fact, three Whitecaps played for their national teams: Sebastian Berhalter (USA), Andrés Cubas (Paraguay) and Rayan Elloumi (Tunisia). This month, the ‘Caps play home games against the LA Galaxy (Aug 1), Houston Dynamo (Aug 19) and Dallas FC (Aug 22).
Pleasant Day Festival
August 8
One of our favourite local neighbourhoods, Mount Pleasant is home to a vibrant arts community, dining scene, and lots of great shopping. Pleasant Day is a street party running along Main Street from 12 pm – 8 pm between 16th and Kind Edward avenues. A big draw is the live music. You’ll find four stages featuring a host of local talent, including The Halucci Nation, True Mountain Laurel, and Teon Gibbs. You’ll also find food trucks and stalls, market vendors, beer gardens, and lots of family-friendly games and activities.

Throughout August
If your vacation isn’t complete without catching a live show or two, then this August, you’re in luck! August is usually a great month to catch live music thanks to the annual Summer Night Concerts series at the PNE—this year sees the concerts take place under the brand new arch amphitheatre. But that’s not the only show in town! Catch one of the hottest K-pop bands, IVE, at Rogers Arena (Aug 9). That’s also where you’ll see The Strokes (Aug 27) later in the month. BC Place hosts Noah Kahan (Aug 28) and Guns n’ Roses (Aug 28). Looking for something a little more intimate? Angine de Poitrine performs at The Pearl on Granville Street (Aug 23 and 24).
