It looks like the sun is coming out to shine on summer in Vancouver! July kicks off with Canada Day, and includes some of the city’s biggest parties of the year thanks to Vancouver Pride and Celebration of Light. This month is full of festivals, street parties and lots of excuses to get outside and have fun. If your approach is a little more chill, you can always hit the beach with a book, stroll Vancouver’s diverse neighbourhoods, or pack a picnic and hike out to a cool spot in one of our provincial parks. Below are some of our favourite things to do in Vancouver this July.

Vancouver Ice Cream Festival
June 20 – August 4
They had us at “Ice Cream Festival”! Sample cool treats across the city at your own pace with Vancouver Ice Cream Festival. With 32 gelaterias, ice cream shops, cafes and more participating, offering limited time creations (dairy and non-dairy, gluten-filled and gluten-free!), the best way to choose where to hit up is to visit the interactive map on the festival’s website. Collect a passport sheet from any participating vendor to collect stamps and win prizes! Some of our favourites that are taking part include Beaucoup Bakery, Mister, Drunken Chocolatier and Bella Gelateria.

Theatre Under the Stars, Stanley Park, Vancouver

Theatre Under the Stars
June 27 – August 16
Sunshine and Stanley Park are synonymous with a Vancouver summer. Make the most of balmy evenings by catching a show at Theatre Under The Stars at Malkin Bowl in the park. This season’s productions are Legally Blonde, the tale of sorority girl Elle Woods, who takes on Harvard Law School despite being dismissed as ditzy; and Roald Dahl’s Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, the family friendly classic that introduces us to Charlie and his fellow ticket winners as they try to claim the grand prize from Willy Wonka!

Khatsahlano Festival, Camp Khats

Khatasahlano Street Festival
July 5
Vancouver’s largest free music and arts festival is back this summer, and it’s bigger than ever! Stretching along the Kitsilano neighbourhood’s West 4th Avenue from Burrard to Macdonald, the Khatsahlano Street Festival from 11 am through to 9 pm. Two main stages bookend the festival (one at Burrard and one at Macdonald) with six smaller stages in between, all boasting a range of musical acts throughout the day. This year’s theme is “Camp Khats”, inspired by the nostalgia of summer camps, and promising to bring the spirit of the wilderness to this urban festival, complete with scavenger hunts, s’mores, sing-a-longs and games.

Carnaval del Sol
July 11 – 13
Carnaval del Sol is the biggest Latin American event in the Pacific Northwest, and we can’t think of many better ways to spend a summer afternoon. This year’s festival highlights “energy, resilience and the joy of Latin communities”! Taking place at Jonathan Rogers Park in Mount Pleasant, the opening night party is headlined by Alejandro Palacio, a Vallenato artist from Colombia and tickets include a pre-show dance lesson and Colombian food, with music playing all night and drinks available for purchase! The next two days are more family-friendly, and general admission will give you access to live performances over 10 stages, a live soccer tournament, a beer garden, a food plaza with dishes from 15 different countries, and two whole areas dedicated to family-friendly performances and activities.
