Even during a normal year, we think that May is one of the best times to visit Vancouver. But with the FIFA World Cup kicking off in June, it’s even more the case this year! The weather is getting more consistent after those April showers, but those crowds are still a month away. This May, we’re focusing on some of the great cultural activities in our city: from an insider’s wine festival to a contemporary art fair, and a sweet performing arts festival for the kiddos. Here are our top picks for things to do in Vancouver in May.

Cauliflowers at the West End Farmers market in Vancouver

West End Farmers Market
Saturdays from May 2 through October 31
Just a block over from The Burrard, the West End Farmer’s Market is one of our favourite summer weekend stops, and this year, it’s opening even earlier than last year! Each Saturday morning, around 30 vendors set up from 9 am through to 2 pm along the 1100 block of Comox Street. Whether you’re picking up coffee and pastries for breakfast on the go, the freshest fruit and veggies for a picnic, or homemade pickles and jams for gifts, you won’t want to miss this community market.

Top Drop Vancouver wine festival

Top Drop Wine Festival
May 11 + 12
If the Vancouver International Wine Festival is too overwhelming, or you just find yourself seeking out the smaller producers, the annual Top Drop festival in Yaletown could well be what you’re looking for. Top Drop brings together 70+ wineries producing terroir-driven, handcrafted wines from around the world. Among those pouring at this year’s edition are Gunderloch from Germany, Champagne Legras et Haas and La Chablisienne from France, Australia’s Ricca Terra, and local favourites Orofino, Pamplemousse Jus, Bella Wines, and Ursa Major. The main tasting room event on May 12 is joined by an introductory night of wine parties around the Yaletown neighbourhood on the Monday night, including Euro Plaza outdoors at Helmcken Plaza; and Hemispheres at Heist, and Home Turf in the Earl’s Loft.

Comedy Patrol at Vancouver International Children's Festival

Vancouver International Children’s Festival
May 25 – 31
Did you know that Vancouver is home to one of the world’s longest running performing arts festivals for kids? Vancouver International Children’s Festival spans music, theatre, dance, puppetry, acrobatics and storytelling as well as creative activities for the whole family. With performances down at Granville Island, you can catch a whole schedule of events during the day, but also Pyjama Nights and early evening shows! Tickets also include an Activity Village wristband giving you access to the craft stations, storytelling, cultural stops and other activities on site.

Art Vancouver art fair

Art Vancouver
May 28 – 31
Western Canada’s premier contemporary art festival is back for the 10th year, with four days of talks, demonstrations, seminars, lessons, and of course, the exhibit hall. Located downtown at the Vancouver Convention Centre, Art Vancouver attracts over 100 galleries and artists from around the globe for what is more than just an “art fair”. Whether you’re a serious collector or a new art enthusiast, this show will connect you with a diverse array of artists, giving you insight into their process, personality and inspiration.
