Things to Do in Vancouver – October 2023
Wendy Underwood
We’ve left summer behind and we’re ready to lean in heavily to fuzzy sweaters, crunchy leaves, chunky novels, and everything pumpkin-spiced. Luckily for us, Vancouver is full of fall-appropriate activities, from a harvest celebration to the kick-off of the arts season. Here are our picks for what to do in Vancouver this October.
Vancouver Outsider Art Festival
October 12 – 17
Showcasing works by visual artists and performers existing outside of the mainstream, the Vancouver Outsider Arts Festival is a great way to expand your artistic horizons. Get a sneak peek of the works of over 400 artists at the free opening night event at Yaletown’s Roundhouse Community Centre. From there, you’re invited to get involved by attending workshops, experiencing a short film series, and taking in the exhibition hall showcasing participating visual artists.
UBC Apple Festival
October 14 & 15
Nothing says fall like a bushel of freshly-picked apples! Back for its 32nd year, the UBC Apple Festival is the place to try varieties that you’ve never seen before in the Tasting Tent, stock up on apples, buy fruit trees, and learn more about everything pomme while you enjoy fall treats. This is a family-friendly event, with a kids area (complete with fan-favourite, the leaf pile!) and entertainment for all ages. Note that tickets should be purchased online in advance of attending.
Vancouver Writers Festival
October 16 – 22
If the leaves changing colour make you want to snuggle up with a good book, you’re not alone. The annual Vancouver Writers Festival gives you plenty of options to consider, with a week of events bringing together some of the biggest literary names on the planet! Fans of the written word will find everything from moderated panels to readings, writing workshops and even a literary cabaret. Most events take place on Granville Island, which gives you a great excuse to visit one of the handful of bookstores in the district while you’re there.
The Baby Show
October 28 – 29
If there was ever an excuse for a Vancouver babymoon, this would be it! The Baby Show pops up at the Vancouver Convention Centre at the end of October, and for two days modern parents and parents-to-be can combine a city getaway with the chance to scope out the newest products from big brands as well as local independent sellers. And it’s not just a marketplace—there will also be workshops, demonstrations and seminars catering to those parenting newborns through to toddlers.
