Upcoming Event: Invictus Games, February 8 – 16, 2025
Wendy Underwood
Being held in both Vancouver and Whistler this February, the seventh Invictus Games brings together wounded, injured and sick service personnel and veterans for a world-class sporting competition that inspires and supports the community, and brings greater recognition to those who serve their country.
Originally founded by Prince Harry in 2013, the event will see up to 550 athletes from 25 countries compete in 11 different sports. For the first time, the Games will include winter sports – most of which will be held in Whistler. However, Vancouver is the hub of the Invictus Games, with three venues hosting six sports: Vancouver Convention Centre is home to wheelchair basketball, wheelchair rugby, indoor rowing and sitting volleyball competitions; Hillcrest Centre will host wheelchair curling; and the UBC Aquatics Centre is the venue for swimming events. Tickets for sporting events range from $13 – $28.
In addition to the sporting competitions, the Invictus Opening and Closing Ceremonies will be held in Vancouver, attracting some big names who will perform in honour of the competitors. On February 8 at 1 pm, the Opening Ceremony will take place at BC Place Stadium and include performances by Katy Perry, Noah Kahan, Nelly Furtado and Roxane Bruneau. The Closing Ceremony will take place next door at Rogers Arena on February 16 at 6 pm featuring headliners Jelly Roll, Barenaked Ladies, and The War and Treaty.
