From October 18 through 25, Vancouver Writers Fest takes place, with most events on Granville Island. If the leaves changing colour make you want to snuggle up with a good book, you’re not alone! Fans of the written word will find everything from moderated panels to readings, writing workshops and even a literary cabaret. The annual festival gives you plenty of options to consider, with a week of events bringing together some of the biggest literary names on the planet! While you’re on Granville Island, take the opportunity to visit one of the handful of bookstores in the district while you’re there. Here are some of this year’s events that are at the top of our wish list.

Barbara Kingsolver in Conversation (October 18)

Pulitzer Prize-winning author, Barbara Kingsolver, opens the festival with discussion about her latest book, Partita, with live piano accompaniment.

UBC Night Class (October 21)

An annual festival favourite, this interactive workshop features writing tips and prompts across genres under the guidance of instructors from UBC’s School of Creative Writing.

Dancing On My Own: Lyrics Night (October 23)

Writers will have you laughing, crying and everything in between as they perform dramatic readings of the lyrics to their desert island songs. Keep the fun going with a free ticket to the “Let’s Groove: Dance Party” right afterwards.

Vancouver: A Field Guide (October 24)

Join three local authors: Justin McElroy, Steve Burgess and Christopher Cheung, each with their own book on Vancouver. They’ll share their perspectives on what makes this city tick.
