If the leaves changing colour make you want to snuggle up with a good book, you’re not alone. The annual Vancouver Writers Festival gives you plenty of options to consider, with a week of events bringing together some of the biggest literary names on the planet! From October 21 through 27, fans of the written word will find everything from moderated panels to readings, writing workshops and even a literary cabaret. Most events take place on Granville Island, which gives you a great excuse to visit one of the handful of bookstores in the district while you’re there. Here are some of this year’s events that are at the top of our wish list.
Night Class: A Workshop with UBC School of Creative Writing (October 23)
An interactive workshop with writing tips and tricks embracing rapid-fire creativity, led by five members of UBC’s Creative Writing faculty.
Ru + Kim Thúy in Conversation (October 23)
A joint presentation between VWF and Vancouver International Film Festival that includes a screening of Ru, based on the book by Kim Thúy, followed by an on-stage discussion with the author.
Heather O’Neill in Conversation (October 24)
A conversation with the Quebec author about her latest book, The Capital of Dreams, which delves into a forgotten country and a world shaped by fairy tales.
Roddy Doyle in Conversation (October 26)
The Booker Prize-winning Irish author joins the festival to discuss his latest book, The Women Behind the Door, a return to the family in his earlier work, The Woman Who Walked Into Doors. almost 30 years later.
