Winter Solstice Lantern Festival

It’s no surprise that December is full of festive fun in Vancouver – it’s the holiday season, after all! If you want the scoop on those activities, check out this round-up of our favourite holiday season things to do here. But we’ve gone above-and beyond this month, with plenty more ways to spend your time in Vancouver in December!

Imperial & Strong Beer Festival
December 1 & 2
Hey – we get it: Christmas can be stressful, and sometimes you need something stronger than your regular 5% pale ale. The Imperial & Strong Beer Festival, hosted by Parallel 49 in East Vancouver, celebrates these punchier brews, clocking in around 8 – 12%, and will feature beers from seven other breweries including Parkside Brewing, Strange Fellows and Four Winds.

Weirdos Holiday Market
December 14 & 15
Technically, this is a holiday event, but you’re not going to find your regular craft market fare here! Celebrating the kooky to the macabre, the Weirdos Holiday Market is the place to find the perfect gift for the oddballs on your list this year. Held at the Ukrainian Cathedral Hall at 10th and Main, and curated by This Monkey’s Gone to Heaven (the strangest trinket store you’ve ever been to), this is a holiday market unlike any other.

Winter Solstice Lantern Festival
December 21
The shortest day of the year is celebrated at the annual Winter Solstice Lantern Festival in three Vancouver neighbourhoods—Yaletown, Granville Island and Strathcona—with fire performances, drumming, singing, music and of course – lanterns! Festivities run from 6 p.m. – 10 p.m., with a special “Fire Finale” at 9:30 p.m. Follow the procession of lanterns through each neighbourhood to its final location which includes an indoor space for activities including a lantern-making workshop.

Contact Winter Music Festival
December 27 & 28
If electronic dance music is your thing, then this is going to help you get through Christmas with your relatives. Held over two days down at BC Place stadium, Contact Winter Music Festival brings together 22 artists who span the genre, headlined by Major Lazer on the first day, and Tiesto on day two.
