It’s fair to say that Vancouver has had a mild winter up to this point – especially compared with the rest of the country. But no one is coming to Vancouver in February for the weather. That said, there are a ton of other reasons to visit! We kick off the month with Dine Out Vancouver, and we get a fit of the giggles with the Just For Laughs comedy festival in the middle, but it’s also Black History Month and Lunar New Year! Below are our top picks for things to do in Vancouver this February.

Chinatown Vancouver

Lunar New Year Celebrations in Chinatown
February 6 – 22
There are lots of options for celebrating Lunar New Year in Vancouver, especially in the historic Chinatown neighbourhood, abutting downtown. The official start of the Year of the Horse is on Tuesday, February 17, but celebrations start earlier in the month and continue through until February 22, which is when the annual Chinatown Spring Festival Parade winds through the neighbourhood on February 2, bringing good luck to all. If you’re heading to the parade, check out Dr. Sun Yat-Sen Classical Chinese Garden, which will host activities and programs on both the Saturday and Sunday, free with entry. Throughout February, the Chinatown Storytelling Centre is home to the Taste of Chinatown festival with a cocktail competition, a candy tasting and more.

The Lantern City Year of the Horse

The Lantern City and LunarFest
February 14 – March 9
With five sites around central Vancouver, The Lantern City is a major public art installation celebrating the lunar Year of the Horse with the theme “Brave the Wind”. Light installations at each location have a unique approach to the overarching theme. The Lantern City is part of LunarFest, an event that celebrates the lunar new year with arts, storytelling and culture. Other activities include the LNY Splash film series, a cooking workshop, musical performance and drag.

Fan Expo Vancouver
February 14 – 16
If you’re a fan of sci-fi, gaming, comics, anime or horror, Fan Expo Vancouver is the place to be. This year’s big draw is the Lord of the Rings 25th Anniversary Tour, with a panel featuring Elijah Wood, Sean Astin, Dominic Monaghan and Billy Boyd. Along with autograph and photo ops with celebs such as Tom Welling (Smallville), Cary Elwes (The Princess Bride, Saw, Stranger Things), Katee Sackhoff (The Mandalorian, Battlestar Galactica) and four actors from Twilight, you’ll have the chance to connect with your favourite voice actors, gaming stars and comic creators. And don’t forget your costume: cosplay is a big part of the fun.

Outdoor Adventure & Travel Show
February 28 & March 1
The annual Outdoor Adventure & Travel Show is a must-visit for adventurous travellers and fans of the Great Outdoors alike. Held at the Vancouver Convention Centre, it features destinations ranging from those nearby like Squamish and the Fraser Valley, through to far-flung locals such as the Himalayas. Visitors can meet adventure travel companies, tour operators, camping gear specialists, SCUBA schools, and even try out a climbing wall. The event is paired with the BC Bike Show, making it an essential stop for mountain bikers and road cyclists.
